Announced in early January 2010, the addition of a production unit of electric motors in the factory GM Baltimore takes a turn more operational with the start, late work.
Specializing in the production of transmissions, the GM plant (Allison Transmission) of Baltimore will be the first group also to produce electric motors. This will be an engine for use in hybrid vehicles (including plug-in) propulsion.
The investment of $ 255 million is funded with millions in GM de129, 105 million by the Department of Energy, the state of Maryland 4.5 million and 6 million Baltimore County.
Just like what GM announced for the Flint plant, the site of Baltimore will also be an installation of solar panels. Constellation Energy will implement in effect on the roof panels with a capacity of 1.23 MW. Enough to supply 9% of the total energy used by the factory, knowing that GM has embarked on a 20-year contract to purchase all electricity produced by the plant.
The laying of foundation stone was attended by officials, and work will begin officially in July. Production should start in 2013.
